A Cold Lake fighter detachment commander is one of more than 70 Canadians receiving honours during a special ceremony at the Shaw Conference Centre on Thursday.
Lieutenant-Colonel David Charles Moar will receive a military meritorious service medal for his service within Air Task Force-Iraq in Kuwait between October 2014 and April 2015.
According to a release, Moar’s “outstanding leadership enabled Canadian fighter aircraft to begin combat missions within 36 hours of arriving in theatre.”
“Moreover, his tireless efforts to improve and sustain operations enabled impressive sortie launch reliability.
“Lieutenant-Colonel Moar’s accomplishments greatly contributed to Canada being recognized as an effective and reliable coalition nation in the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.”
Governor General of Canada, David Johnston, will present the awards that recognize “excellence, courage or exceptional dedication to service”.
Others to receive honours include Sherwood Park native Dr. Robert Edward Burrell, who developed the world’s first therapeutic medical application of nanotechnology and Edmonton’s Philip J. Currie who pioneered the use of CT scanners to generate three-dimensional models of fossil specimens to study the biomechanics, growth and physiology of dinosaurs.
